March / April Events

Chess Sets Available - Chess pieces (and extra queens) in a vinyl zippered bag along with a vinyl annotated board which rolls up & slides into a holder - $15. Bags: choice of black or red. Boards: choice of green, black, blue, or red. Sets are being sold to raise money for 8th grade trip to D.C. Limited number of sets available. Contact Clark Stridsberg 223-1948

Monday, March 17th - School Board Meeting 6:15pm. Come meet the new school board members. Agenda posted under School Board on the school website.

Wednesday, March 19th 6:30pm-8:30pm - Parent Info Night at U-32 for 6th grade parents. Only the parents need to attend.
****Thursday, March 20 5:30-8pm "Affordable Housing in Your Community" hosted by Central Vermont Community Land Trust. Location: Berlin Elementary FREE food, childcare, and transportation. This is for residents of Berlin, Northfield, Orange, Washington, Williamstown and Roxbury. Preregister on line http://www.cvclt.org Call 476-4493 x200 with questions.

March 20 is "Sweater Day" - in honor of Mister Rogers, will cap off the "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Days March 15-20. It would have been Fred Rogers 80th birthday this year. For more information visit http://www.misterrogers.org . Let's remember those sweaters, and sneakers too!

Friday, March 21st 6:30pm Barn Dance at Berlin Elem. - end of week long unit for 3rd & 4th graders. Other students, parents, staff and friends welcome and encouraged to join in the fun of this contra dance! No experience necessary.

March 21st - 30th - Green Mountain Film Festival in Montpelier at various locations. http://www.greenmountainfilmfestival.org Pull out section in current issue of Seven Days newspaper. Films to watch and special events. Tickets for single admissions and punch cards available.

March 29th - Dabble Day at U-32 9:30am - 1pm Sponsored by Success by Six. FREE FAMILY EVENT!!! Fun and messy activities for children ages birth through 6 and their families. Play dough, seed planting, bubbles, and more... each child may choose a free book to take home.

Friday, April 4th 10am - 11:30am Come join us for John Cohn's "Jolts & Volts" show which teaches about electricity, light and optics. Dr. Cohn lives in Richmond and works at IBM and goes around with his science show as part of IBM's community outreach. Friday, April 4th Spaghetti Dinner at U-32. Fundraiser for 8th grade students going to Washington, DC in June. Two seatings at 6pm & 7pm. Advance tickets available from 8th graders (including my son!). $10 adult / $5 students & seniors / or $30 for a family. The evening will include entertainment, a silent auction and also a raffle. Great community event!

April 11 - 13 The Wiz at U-32 Friday & Saturday evening shows and Sunday matinee. Tickets must be purchased in advance and usually sell out quickly.

Saturday, April 12th - Vermont State Scholastic Chess Tournament for K-12 students at Camel's Hump school. Details at http://vtchess.info There are always at least a few students from our district and if you're looking for familiar faces, the Stridsberg's will be at the event - adults working and kids competing!

The 11th annual “Becoming an Outdoor Family” camping weekend will take place May 30 through June 1 at Stillwater State Park in Groton. This year will feature 57 workshops to choose from with 18 being brand new or enhanced workshops. Here’s a sample of the offerings this year: Hiking, Nature Photography, Build Rustic Furniture, Camping Skills, Herbal Medicinal Teas Plant Walk, Outdoor Cooking Tour Groton Lake in a canoe with the state Commissioner of Fish & Wildlife Take a nature writing workshop with Vermont author Shawn Kerivan Children’s literature outdoors with University of Vermont Extension program’s Martha Manning Pressed flower art with UVM Extension program’s Rita Charlton What kind of tree is it? with Kate Forrer, urban and community outreach specialist Search for salamanders, frogs and snakes with Jim Andrews, herpetologist, Middlebury College — Vermont's Leading expert on frogs, snakes and salamanders Try your shooting skills with instructors from 4-H Shooting Sports
This program is a joint effort by the UVM Extension and the VT Agency of Natural Resources' Departments of Fish & Wildlife, and the Forests, Parks & Recreation. Thursday & Friday, June 5 & 6 - Fifth & Sixth grade production of "Once Upon A Marigold". Dress rehersal Thursday afternoon and evening performances on both Thursday and Friday.
