TONIGHT & Upcoming
SUMMER SWIM LESSON SIGN-UP: 6pm Wednesday, May 7th in the Berlin Elem. School Lobby. Berlin Community Swim Lessons at First in Fitness will take place on the following dates this summer: First session July 7-18; Second session August 4-15. Each two week session of 45 minutes per day will cost $20 per child. Sign-ups will be in person on Wednesday, May 7th at 5:30pm. Any slots available after this will continue to be filled. Note that this year Community Connections is offering a two-week program at Berlin Elementary during the July swim session which will provide transportation over to swim lessons and back IF you're signed up for both their program and for swim lessons. Please see the attached sheet for further swim lesson details.
CELEBRATION OF ART & MUSIC: 6:30pm Wednesday, May 7th in the Berlin Elem. School Learning Center. A fantastic display of artwork awaits you. Please note that much of this artwork will be taken down immediately following the evening event. The 5th & 6th grade band students will be performing at this event.
TUT'S TOMB: 5th & 6th grade will be setting this up on Thursday for a VIEWING ON FRIDAY by Berlin students and any parents who are able to come by during the day.

FAVORITE WEBSITES: Speaking of favoriate websites, our librarian, Amy Young, introduced me to a great site called http://del.icio.us . By registering at this site, you are able to tag sites you like to visit and then access them from any computer. For instance, if you want to see sites I go to look at: http://del.icio.us/socialenergy . It's quick and easy to either add them or delete them. You might want to tag several sites and send them along to a friend or coworker for a project that you're working on.

BASKETBALL UPDATE:
Paquet Basketball scholarship possibility: Frank FM is offering a scholarship to one boy and one girl (grades 3 - 9) to attend the Paquet Basketball camp this summer. Visit the Frank FM website for more details: http://www.1071frankfm.com
FOOTBALL PLAYERS:
VT All-Star Football Camps for students in grades 5 - 12. This is a wonderful camp designed for the beginner to the advanced football player. There are opportunities at various locations, the closest one is at the South Burlington High School. These camps have been running for over 27 years now! The week long instructional camp takes place in the evening starting at 5:30pm. There have always been numerous kids from central Vermont attending this camp and carpooling. YEARBOOK ORDERS: Please be sure to send yearbook orders in. Cost is $14. If you're choosing to sell raffle tickets to pay for your book, those tickets must be in by Friday, May 9th to be included in the drawing. Additional raffle ticket sales are appreciated to help cover the cost of the yearbook.

Current lifeguarding, CPR & First Aid certification will be required; training available (applicants must meet swim skill requirements) Water Safety Instructors also needed to teach swimming lessons. Berlin Historical Society Potluck/Program Meeting - You are invited to attend our Tuesday, May 13, 2008 meeting. The public is invited and there is no charge. Location is the Berlin Corner Congregational Church Parish Hall. The potluck begins at 6:00 PM. The program begins at about 7 PM. Our featured speaker will be Howard Coffin who will talk on ""Civil War Discoveries in Vermont" Howard is researching all of the towns in Vermont with the plan to publish a book on those findings. Howard Coffin is the author of 3 books on the Civil War, Full Duty, Nine Months to Gettysburg and The Battered Stars. Cheryl Poor is coordinating the Pot Luck. If you plan to attend the pot luck meal please call Cheryl at 223-5306 poorcheryl@verizon.net to tell her what you plan to bring. MARCH TO THE ROCK, Friday, May 23rd 9am. Please join us for our March to the Rock - this tradition of parading over to the "Veterans Memorial Park" (the "Rock") at Berlin Four Corners (the corner beyond Shaw's where you turn right to get to the town offices) has been going on since 1989, if not before. The rock sits on the site of where the first school in Berlin was. The school has some flags and I also have a large stash that I bring in which enables each student who would like to carry a flag to safely do so. Police and fire department folks stop traffic for us at the big intersection and we all parade over with flags and the 5th & 6th graders with some instruments to have our Memorial Day event there. Various grade levels have chosen something to sing, recite, or perform. Students/adults not wishing to participate, remain at school. If the weather is inclement, we do something at the school. Family and friends are welcome to join us in our March to the Rock, or they may choose to meet us there. We leave the school right after the bell has rung at 9:05am.
6th Grade Parents: Please join us for the final Middle School Parent Teacher Council meeting of the year: Thursday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room at the back of the U-32 library. Discussion Topic: Middle School Town Meetings
5th / 6th grade parents: The morning of graduation, usually a few parents get together to put together corsages for all the graduates and the staff involved in the ceremony. this is typically a combination of 5th & 6th grade parents to keep the tradition going. if you're able to help with this please let me know or send along a note to one of the teachers. we also need somebody able to actually pick up the flowers and supplies needed in advance.
6th Grade Parents: A couple people have asked if anything is in the works for a 6th grade class party the afternoon of graduation. Typically a person or group of people pick a time for a meeting and as many of the parents as possible attend to plan out the details - location, activities, food, cake, etc. I'm happy to send out an email announcing such a meeting and to make sure a paper goes to the folks I can't email. Who can get these plans rolling?
School Board next meets on Monday, May 19th at 6:15pm in the Berlin Elem. School Learning Center. These meetings are open to the public. The agenda is posted on line a few days before the meeting. At this meeting the 5/6 teachers will present a brief summary of their curriculum and activities. It is anticipated that the folks who are being recommended for hire into the 5/6 unit next school year will be approved by the school board. In fact, these candidates are expected to be in attendance at the school board meeting.
