POTATOES! - on a Sunday in September which has not yet been announded, will be the long standing tradition of potato picking at the Chappelle Potato Farm in Williamstown, Vermont. The Stridsberg family has been going behind the digger for probably 20 years picking hundreds of pounds of potatoes every year, mostly for their own use! The cost is well below what you pay in the grocery store. Bring your buckets or sacks and wear your boots and old clothes. We have one more child fundraising for their 8th grade trip to DC so if you don't want to pick the potatoes yourself or just can't make it there - you'll still able to buy potatoes at below store cost through us and help a good cause! Fresh & local - You can also buy 50 lb sacks of various grades of potatoes from the Chappelle warehouse throughout most of the year. More information to come when the picking date is announced.

Corinne and Jeff, I am wondering if you would be willing to send this note around to your email lists. It directly impacts Berlin residents in need and I am hoping that we can attract volunteer drivers to assist in the Meals on Wheels program. Many thanks. Pat McDonald
LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER DRIVERS TO DELIVER MEALS ON WHEELS TO BERLIN SENIORS
Many people think that Meals on Wheels is a nationally run organization or a set of Federal programs that are similar to Medicare. Neither is the case. Meals on Wheels is a generic term to define organizations that have the primary function of providing meals for seniors in their homes. They are loosely affiliated organizations (usually staffed by volunteers) that are run by churches, civic-minded individuals, senior residence homes, and some local and state funded agencies. These organizations are run independently and are responsible for bringing on new volunteers to deliver meals and each sets its own rules, though most are very similar.
Berlin does not have such an organization and we have been fortunately that are seniors have been assisted by Montpelier's Meals on Wheels organizations (and others). More recently the numbers of seniors in need of such a services has increased and Berlin has been asked to establish a more formal relationship with the Montpelier Home Delivery Program (MHDP).
The MHDP currently serves 27 clients, 9 are residents from Berlin with 8 clients on the waiting list (2 in Berlin). MHDP advises that 10.5% of Berlin population are senors who live alone; 7.5% of residents in Berlin, age 65 and older, live below the poverty line; and according to the 2000 census data, there are 484 seniors in Berlin that could be eligible for the program.
MHDP is looking for Berlin to form a volunteer group of about 8 - 10 drivers for Berlin seniors. These volunteers would be ask to deliver Meals on Wheels by following a designated route from 10 a.m. until approximatley 12.30 p.m. each day. In most cases, the meals need to be delivered 7 days a week, but the number of days per volunteers would depend on the number of volunteers.
Meals are prepared by NECI and meet the national dietary guidelines. They are prepared and frozen immediately. Each day these meals are either heated to temperature for hot meal clients and packaged in hot boxes for deliveries or are delivered as "frozen meals to go", which makes it possible to serve seniors out on the back roads of Berlin, where mileage and travel time make it ery difficult to plan regular routes for the limited number of volunteer drivers.
If you are interested in participating as a volunteer driver, please contact Pat McDonald at 476-8411 or by email at patmcdonald8411@charter.net. MHDP has advised that each volunteer will be subject to a background check and must have a vehicle, insurance and a valid drivers license. Volunteers do not receive mileage reimbursement. Once Berlin is able to get a group together, we will have a meeting with MHDP's Kimberley Lashua to discuss the program in more detail, answer all your questions, and finalize details.
We have been trying to put something together for Berlin for quite some time and are very pleased that MHDP is willing to have Berlin be included as a set-set of their program.
Many thanks!
