Potatoes - did you miss the one and only pick your own potatoes day at Chappelle's? You still have a couple of options to purchase their fresh local potatoes. You can still drive to Williamstown and buy bags of potatoes from their warehouse in Williamstown (433-5930) over the next 6 months (prices vary according to the type of potatoes), or for a limited time you can buy some of their potatoes from our daughter, Minda, who picked extra and is selling them as a fundraiser for her trip to DC. at a cost of $5 for 10lbs.

Wednesday, October 7th - "Know what to do about the flu" forum will be held at the Barre Opera House 7-9pm. This is to brief local leaders and residents about preparations underway for the new flu - 2009 H1N1 influenza - along with the regular seasonal flu. State officials and public health experts will be on hand to discuss preparations the state is making - including plans for offering H1N1 vaccine to those groups most at risk for serious illness - as well as the actions communities and individuals can take to cope with the flu. IN NEED OF COSTUMES?
October 10 & 11 Chandler Costume sale in Randolph - Over the years the Chandler Center for the Arts collection of costumes has outgrown not only its space, but also its needs. Volunteers have been working this fall to cull out pieces that are no longer needed for stage productions. As a result, with Halloween right around the corner, Chandler is holding a gigantic public two-day sale in the Chandler upper gallery Saturday, OCtober 10 from 9am-3pm and Sunday, October from 11:30 - 3:30pm. Just the right trick-or-treating costume can be put together in minutes, from piles and piles of trousers, dresses, tops, gloves, belts, shoes, purses, hats - you name it. And of course, for the play-dress-up crowd there is much potential. Volunteer and sale organizer Pauline Garner promises there will be tones of bargains for all. One can walk in with a few dollars in hand and go home as a king, a queen, a ballerina, a pirate, or whatever one's imagination conjures up. Also in Randolph is the Gifford Auxillary Thrift shop which is open during the week until 4pm and on Saturdays until 1pm. I think it opens at 10am. Located just past the hospital on upper Main Street, the thrift shop is known for having some fun items for Halloween.
If you travel further south, you'll find the "Listen" thrift stores. In October these two stores have an incredible amount of costumes and accessories for Halloween. Directions: White River Junction - Listen at River Point, located on Route 4 in WRJ next to the NH-VT bridge. Lebanon, NH - Interstate 89, to exit 18 east toward Lebanon. Turn left at stop sign onto Hanover Street. Store is located at 60 Hanover Street, on corner of Hough Street, across from Sacred Heart Church.

Please note in October the Berlin School Board will meet Wednesday, October 21st at U-32 High School for a "carousel" meeting. Individual boards will meet from 5:30-6:30pm and 7:30-9pm while the full board will meet from 6:30-7:30pm.
Usually the Berlin School Board meets on the 2nd Monday of the month in the Berlin Elementary School Learning Center. Agendas and minutes can be found on the school website - see the link on the side bar on the main page. The public is welcome to attend board meetings and encouraged to find out more about the school budget while it's in it's planning stage.

A 30 minute DVD demonstrating simple weatherization measures to Button-Up you home is available for you to borrow either at Berlin Elementary School (on the table just outside the main office) or at the Berlin Town Office on Shed Road. (turn to the right after you enter the main door, DVDs are on the shelf of the hutch on the left). There are 5 copies at each location, just return the DVD after you have viewed it.
All local libraries also have a copy and may be viewed on their computers.You can still borrow a half hour long DVD on basic ways you can improve the weatherization of your home.
