BERLIN, VERMONT MEMORIES
I am so happy to see the interest in Berlin's past with folks joining the "Berlin, Vermont Memories" group. It's quite the variety of information and photos being posted.  The Berlin Historical Society members (which includes me!) are providing items from their vast collection that I know you will find interesting.   For those interested in Berlin history there is a program in May you're bound to enjoy, "Berlin Pictures of the Past" (see separate post further down) www.facebook.com/groups/BerlinVermontMemories

EARTH DAY
Ways to celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22nd - with kids on vacation perhaps they could work on a project or two - plant a tree or some wildflowers, build a bird house or bat house;  learn more about the environment by picking an issue to read more about - pollution, water shortages, recycling, climate change, etc.; attend an educational session regarding the environment; find out about more products that can be recycled or reused, make plans to participate in Green Up Day on May 2nd (if you won't be available that day, do some advanced Green Up); take the time to find or make some Earth-friendly cleaning products;  make an effort to purchase items from a local farm stand or farmers market; conserve water; and  walk or ride your bike when possible

WAYSIDE RESTAURANT COOKS UP EARTH DAY EVENT
The Wayside Restaurant and Bakery is celebrating Earth Day this April 22 from 2 – 4 pm at its Route 302 location. The Wayside has been composting its food scraps through the Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District since 2007, diverting over 544 tons of material out of the landfill and into Vermont’s soil.
In fact, Wayside food scraps have been going to Vermont Compost Company, which will be onsite during the Earth Day event selling bags of beautiful, rich compost made from food scraps from restaurants and businesses like the Wayside. CVSWMD will also be on site selling Soil Saver compost bins and Green Cones at cost, and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources will be available to answer questions about Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law, which bans recyclables and organics from the landfill by 2020.
Brian Zechinelli, Wayside owner, said he believes so strongly in his restaurant’s role in providing sustainable, green solutions, that he has made Earth Day a paid working holiday for his staff. The Wayside was the first restaurant in Montpelier to be certified as a Green Restaurant by the Vermont Business Environmental Partnership.
When Zechinelli cooked up his Earth Day plans, he celebrated by giving each of his employees a bag of Vermont Compost.
At 2:00 pm, Zechinelli will be hosting a special media event, and the public is welcome to stop in, enjoy treats and learn more about composting and recycling in Vermont. For more information contact Zechinelli at (802) 223-6611.

SCREEN FREE
When the kids were younger we did the TV Turnoff Weeks which over the years turned into Screen Free Week.  There would be a bit of complaining initially but it was always great to see them find plenty of other stuff to do - board games, books to read, time outside, crafts, etc.  We didn't watch tons of TV anyway, even had a lock on the TV and no TVs in kids bedrooms, didn't have any gaming systems, and although we had more than one computer in the house, those weren't in bedrooms either.  If a week doesn't seem doable, try two or three days.

Here's a challenge - how many adults could go screen free?  If not from May 4-10, perhaps during a few vacation days this summer?

Some interesting posts regarding unplugging for at least a few days each year... why? read on:

CELEBRATE SCREEN FREE WEEK!
On May 4-10, children, families, and communities around the world will rediscover the joys of life beyond the screen. Unplug from digital entertainment and spend your free time playing, reading, daydreaming, creating, exploring, and connecting with family and friends.  www.screenfree.org
